Patriots release Jermaine Cunningham

The former second round pick of the 2010 draft hasn't really panned out.

Cunningham has struggled with injuries at times in his career and largely hasn't been able to turn his potential into anything on the field. His best year was probably last year, when he came up looking bigger and playing as a sub on the defensive line. Cunningham played a Giants-like role, as a DE on the interior line, and while he wasn't perfect, he was contributing.

He ended up getting suspended for PED use later in the year. He never really saw the field again.

Cunningham was injured in training camp. Enough was probably enough for Belichick and the coaching staff. It's another key second round mistake Belichick is admitting to this off-season, after releasing Ras-I Dowling earlier in the week.
