Should LeGarrette Blount be returning kicks?

The big boy LeGarrette Blount has been spotted getting multiple reps in the return game, especially during the preseason. With return specialist and Pro Bowler Leon Washington's status uncertain after being cut and then re-signed by the Patriots, it looks like Blount will be carrying the ball on kickoffs. With a 6-foot and 250 lb build, Blound hardly looks like a kick returner.

Cornerback turned safety Devin McCourty was a primary kick returner for the Patriots last year, but after coming off a shoulder surgery during the offseason, it is unlikely that the team would want to throw him out there. Julian Edelman also has returned kicks in the past, but with the team's offensive weapons seemingly dropping by the minute, Edelman's health and role as a receiver is suddenly more valuable than it has ever been.

Blount himself spoke earlier in the month about the kick-returning gig, saying that he enjoys the excitement of special teams:
“It helps getting the ball in space,” Blount said. “I like it. It’s 11 guys running down the field, trying to hit you. It just sometimes you gotta make a play, make a couple guys miss. That open field running comes in handy. Especially in the running game.”

For a big guy, LeGarrette Blount can be very crafty. At least we know that he will be more productive than Jeff Demps, who the Patriots dealt to get the new return man. Something that the Patriots could really use with an injury plagued offense is some great field position to start their drives. Will Blount get the job done?
