Terrell Owens wants to play for the Patriots... badly

Yesterday Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, who typically focuses on the Celtics, wrote a lengthy piece explaining why the Patriots should sign 39-year old free-agent wide-out Terrell Owens to shore up their issues at wide receiver.

TO last played for the Bengals on 2010

Here is an excerpt from Washburn's article explaining why the Patriots should "give TO a look":

The Patriots failed in recent experiments with Chad Johnson and Brandon Lloyd, but they desperately need an upgrade at receiver. Their Super Bowl window is closing, so the club cannot be so conservative and cautious when seeking talent. Owens is not asking for a multiyear deal or 150 targets, just an opportunity to show his skills at the practice facility sometime soon.;

See the difference between the three receivers mentioned, is that when the Pats brought in Lloyd and Ocho, they still had substantial talent. TO, on the other hand, does not have much, if anything left in the tank. If he did he would be on a team. If he did he wouldn't have been cut by the Seattle Seahawks during the pre-season last year. Owens is also 39 years old. 39. That is not an age that wide receivers become contributing factors on a team contending for a championship.

Believe it or not, I actually wrote back in the preseason that it wouldn't be all that crazy for the team to bring in TO for a look during training camp, especially when they were bringing in the likes of Michael "Molasses" Jenkins. But that would have been the time to bring him in. Not now. Not in the midst of the regular season when the team is trying to figure out their offense and move things forward.

If anything, if the Patriots did bring in Owens, his insertion into the offense would disrupt the development of the young receivers, who above all need in-game reps to improve. TO would take away from those reps.

TO is essentially begging for the Patriots to bring him in. He is quoted at length in this article explaining why he isn't too old, and how he could be a great fit for the offense. To be honest, it is kind of sad. Here is some of what he had to say:

“Obviously the situation with the Patriots, they are starting out with a lot of new guys,” Owens said. “You never know how management is thinking, what their process is as far as bringing in veterans.

“I understand they may look at my age as an issue but I’m not your average 39-year-old. I think if you watch me work out, I’m not really concerned about injuries or anything like that. Plus, I’ll be getting paid the vet minimum, so it’s not like I am asking for any extra incentive in my contract.

In other words: "Please give me a chance Bill! I promise I'll play good! You don't even have to pay me anything!"

TO needs to move on. If the Patriots were to take a grab into the washed-up, future Hall of Famer wide receiver market, I would take Randy Moss over TO. I would say there is also a 0% chance of that happening, but at least Randy has demonstrated some serious chemistry with Tom Brady. And, lets not forget, Moss was a starting wide receiver on a 49ers team that narrowly lost the Super Bowl last year. TO hasn't been a relevant on field player in years.

So no Gary Washburn, the Patriots should not give TO a look, because I can guarantee what they see will not warrant a spot on this team.
