Sheldon Richardson: Brady isn't Superman

Owners, players and coaches always have a different mentality on how to approaches their upcoming opponents. Some show their match-up extreme respect by never underestimating them, others will say whatever they can to criticize. By downplaying your opponent, you can maybe instill a sense of confidence in your own team. There is no shock that the New York Jets seem to be taking this road with their game against the Patriots coming this Sunday.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who some believe to be the 'greatest living American' has undoubtedly received his share of criticism (mostly unwarranted). Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson has decided to look down upon about the future Hall-of-Famer as opposed to respecting his accomplishments:
"I'm not treating him like Superman," defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said Wednesday. "He's Tom Brady; I'm Sheldon Richardson. He's a name. He's a figure, a franchise player. I'm trying to get after him, simple as that. No one really treats him like [Superman] around here. I think he's the complete opposite of that."

Now, first reaction to this leaves us with the impression that Richardson is totally in the wrong. Who is he to say that Tom Brady is no Superman? What has Sheldon Richardson done in his career that credits his comment on Brady at all?

Well, in Richardson's defense, the Jets did hold the Patriots' offense to just 13 points in their game Week 2. Brady went 19-for-39 with just 185 yards and 1 touchdown.

Whether or not you agree with this comment or game approach, Richardson's style of down-playing his opponent clearly worked before, as Brady had one of his worst statistical games of his career in Week 2. We will have to see if the Richardson and the Jets defense can repeat that performance.
