Texans cut Ed Reed, will Patriots try to sign him?

One of the big-name free agents of this past offseason was Ed Reed. The All-Pro safety was fresh off a Super Bowl victory with the Baltimore Ravens and was not expected to be resigned by the team. Reed tested the market and eventually signed with the Houston Texans, though many had speculated that New England was a top candidate to land the future Hall of Famer.

Reed's season thus far has been a disappointment by both his standards and the Texans'. With this role in their defense looking as though it was diminishing every week, it seemed to be more of a matter of 'when' he would be cut, as opposed to 'if'. Well, according to multiple sources, the deed as been done.

So Reed is now available to pick up. Will Bill Belichick finally get the chance to coach Ed Reed, the player that he has been known to praise unlike any other? With safety Steve Gregory currently injured, I would say that this is definitely a possibility. Gregory has played at a very high level this season, but his broken thumb could keep him sidelined for a few weeks. Who better to fill in this hole than the veteran of all veterans, Ed Reed?

The Pats have faith in rookie safety Duron Harmon, who has an interception in both of his past two games. However, a veteran presence to accompany Devin McCourty in the deep defensive backfield seems like something too good to pass up. Keep in mind, this is not the Ed Reed of old. He has definitely lost a step, but his veteran presence alone would help boost this already thriving defense that has unfortunately caught the injury bug.

Reed would not have to do anything more than be a role player, which seems to be the perfect scenario for him. As a quick note, keep in mind that the remaining 31 teams have a chance to claim Ed Reed, as he will have to pass through waivers first before officially becoming a free agent.
