Using the franchise tag on Aqib Talib will cost the Patriots

One of their biggest priorities this offseason is re-signing Aqib Talib. One way to retain the star cornerback that's been kicked around is using the franchise tag on him.

Yeah, about that...

The numbers for franchise tags were given out to teams today, with the number for cornerbacks being $11.8 million. Seeing as how the Patriots have only $12,703,254 in cap space currently, its not very likely at all that they commit to spending that much money on Talib.

That option is out the window. The team has reportedly been in touch with Talib on a contract extension. They are running out of time though, with free-agency starting just around the corner. Teams can begin to negotiate with their own players on extensions from March 8th to the 11th. The 11th is the big day, as free agency begins at 4pm, meaning that if Talib hasn't been signed by then he will hit the open market.

The feeling around the league is that the Patriots are comfortable with that if it happens. After all, the Pats let Talib hit the free market last year and he ended up returning on a one year deal.
