Could the New York Jets be gearing up for a run at Julian Edelman?

While writing last week's post on how Riley Cooper's new contract could affect the free agent market for Julian Edelman, I found an interesting nugget from CSNNE's Tom E. Curran: Curran thinks the Jets could be preparing to target Edelman in free agency
"When you look at a team like the New York Jets, who could sign Edelman, make the Patriots worse, make themselves better, and they've already expressed interest both in Jeremy Maclin [who has since re-signed with the Eagles] and Julian Edelman and improving the slot receiver position, that would make sense. It only takes one team."
This does make a lot of sense from a Jets perspective. Signing Edelman would add a reliable slot receiver to a Jets offense in desperate need of offensive playmakers. While there is some overlap between Edelman and Jeremy Kerley, Edelman brings more pop after the catch, and his prowess on punt returns would also bring a jolt to the Jets special teams.

This move also makes financial sense. The Jets already have an estimated $23.6 million in cap space and the expected cuts of expensive veterans Antonio Cromartie, Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes will open up another $26 million in savings. That would put the Jets at $49.6 million in cap space, which would be the fourth most in the league. These Jets do have money to burn and an glaring need at receiver.

Furthermore, the Jets obviously know that stealing Edelman would piss Bill Belichick and Tom Brady off to no end. We all know that makes this move a little more (ok, a lot more) enticing for Rex Ryan.

How pissed would you be to see Edelman wearing Jets green next season? Vent to us in the comments
