Report: Pats and Broncos may be looking to acquire Darelle Revis

Since the flurry of Larry Fitzgerald to the Patriots rumors subsided a few weeks ago, there hadn't been any "Superstar player to the Patriots" headlines. That ended today when Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk posted an article suggesting that both the Patriots and Broncos may be looking to acquire Darelle Revis from Tampa Bay through a trade.

In the article, Florio doesn't elaborate much on the source of these rumors, but explains why the Broncos and Patriots may be the teams with the strongest interest in Revis:

There’s a theory in league circles that, this time around, other teams want Revis more than his current team wants to trade him. While the $16 million cap figure remains a lot to allocate to a cornerback who prefers playing full-time man-to-man in a system that relies heavily on zone coverage, the sense is that the chatter is coming from teams that would pay the amount for a year or two as part of an all-in effort to win a Super Bowl.

The speculation has centered most prominently on the Patriots and Broncos. Both teams have aging franchise quarterbacks who have managed to contend but not conquer in recent years. Both teams are running out of chances to finish the job.

For New England, paying Revis a $1.5 million roster bonus, a $1.5 million workout bonus, and a $13 million base salary could be a much more desirable alternative than giving a big-money, multi-year deal to Aqib Talib

As Florio discusses, new coach Lovie Smith and GM Jason Licht have stated Revis remains a part of the Buccaneers plans going forward. That being said, $16 million is a ton of money to give to single player while trying to build a contender for the future, especially when Revis' role has been minimized in the team's defensive scheme during his time there.

Florio also points out that if a deal were to materialize, it would have to happen before March 13th, when the team is due to pay him $1.5 million. So, for the next couple weeks, prepare for the "Revis to New England" rumors to take flight.
