Free Agency Recap: Tuesday- Brady to Desean Jackson?

As always, here's your recap of all the previous day's action in the wacky world of NFL free agency.

  • The Patriots actually didn't make any moves yesterday, but they still managed to stay in the news thanks to a report out of Philly that the Patriots were one of two teams to inquire about a trade for Eagles Pro Bowl WR Desean Jackson. It's unclear how serious the talks got or whether they could resurface, but the idea of Tom Brady throwing bombs to Jackson is certainly an tantalizing thought. The Eagles are said to be asking for "at least" a third round pick if they are to trade Jackson, and the Patriots would have to make more cost cutting moves to take on Jackson's $12.75 million cap hit this year.
  • Elsewhere, the Cowboys didn't let allegations of kidney biting keep them from signing DT Henry Melton. The move is mostly significant from a Patriots perspective because it takes the Cowboys out of the market for DE Jared Allen. Free agency hasn't been kind to Allen since the Broncos pulled their 3 year, $30 million deal for him to sign DeMarcus Ware instead; with the Cowboys out of the running, the Seahawks are the only viable option that's had him in for a visit. With his market dwindling, could the Pats open up some space and swoop in?
  • Melton's old team, da Bears, didn't waste any time replacing him with a familiar face. They signed versatile DL Israel Idonije to a one year deal. The 33 year old Idonije has spent 9 years of his productive 11 year career in Chicago, but was with division rival Detroit last season. Chicago also released veteran WR Earl Bennett.
  • The Bengals confirmed everyone's suspicions by informing WR Andrew Hawkins that they would not be matching Cleveland's offer for the restricted free agent. The Browns heavy pursuit of the speedy Hawkins was the main reason they fell out of the running for the now re-signed Julian Edelman.
  • The Raiders replaced departed LT Jared Veldheer by signing Donald Penn. Penn was cut by the Bucs after they signed former Bengal Anthony Collins. Veldheer will be manning the blindside in Arizona. Left tackle musical chairs.
  • The Jaguars added former Raven WR Tandon Doss. Doss rotated with Jacoby Jones for third receiver snaps last year, but became irrelevant with the Ravens addition of Steve Smith.
  • Finally, the Falcons made a sneaky nice move by signing CB/S Javier Arenas away from Arizona. Arenas should be a valuable addition to their secondary due to his versatility; he has experience playing both the slot and as a dime safety. His ability on punt returns should also give the Falcons special teams a jolt.
