Report: Patriots, 49ers have inquired about Philly WR Desean Jackson

This report caught me a little off guard, but the Patriots always have a way of surprising us in the offseason.

According to CSNPhilly, the Eagles are asking for at least a third round pick and possibly more for Jackson. The 5'10", 175 pound Jackson took well to Chip Kelly's offense in 2013, catching 82 balls for 1,332 yards (16.2 per catch) and 9 touchdowns. He's been a dynamic big play threat his whole career, both as a receiver and punt returner.

The biggest obstacle to this potential move is Jackson's current contract, which has him set for a cap hit of $12.75 million this year and $12 million for each of the next two years. It's hard to imagine the Patriots would trade for a contract like that, although they could afford to if they release Vince Wilfork.

My gut feeling is this didn't make it past an initial phone call. The Eagles have reportedly told Jackson that they are not actively shopping him, just listening to what other teams would be willing to offer. There's also a possibility that this inquiry happened before their recent moves dramatically cut into their cap space.

Still, they did call, so there's at least something to this. Stay tuned on this one.
