Sources: Cowboys plan to release Demarcus Ware

This isn't necessarily surprising, but still a big shake up to the free agent market.

The Cowboys reportedly met with Ware, hoping to restructure his deal to reduce his massive $16 million cap hit. With the two sides unable to reach a compromise, Ware will be released, saving the Boys $7.43 million in cap space.

The move was one of the Cowboys' only avenues to open up some breathing room against the cap. Despite multiple cost-cutting moves AND the unexpected bump in cap space, Dallas was still only $1.5 million under the cap. They'll now have just about $9 million to tweak their roster.

Ware is 31, but has still been a productive player in Big D. Ware only bagged 6 sacks last year while playing through injuries, but still was PFF's 8th highest graded 4-3 defensive end. Prior to that, Ware had seven consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks, including 19.5 just two years ago in 2011.

If the Patriots are indeed serious about their desire to add a veteran pass rusher to supplement Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, Ware should instantly jump to the top of their wish list. In addition to being an absolute monster rushing the passer, Ware is a smart, instinctual and versatile player, all qualities that pull at Bill Belichick's heartstrings.
