The New England Patriots have signed Derrick Johnson out of the University of Maine according to the Boston Herald.

Johnson lead the Black bears with sixty catches and two touchdowns, and brings an element of speed to the team with a 4.3 second 40 yard dash.

With this signing, the Patriots now have eleven individuals competing for a spot at wide receiver, and that is in no way a bad thing. Johnson comes in at 5-11 190-lbs and brings in that speed factor.

Johnson has also been building since his sophomore year, when a torn meniscus ended his season, but has shown great improvement ever since the injury. Here are his other stats from his tryout, according to NESN.com:

- 6.60-second three-cone drill
- 4.20-second short shuttle
- 10-foot-2 broad jump
- 33-inch vertical leap

With 11 guys competing for the open spot, training camp should get very interesting very quickly.
