Will Smith deal by the numbers

Yesterday, the Patriots signed Will Smith from the New Orleans Saints on a 1-year deal. Per Boston.com, here are some of the numbers of Smith's deal:

- Smith will make $920,000 total with the Pats, which includes $855,000 in base salary
- It also includes a $15,000 workout bonus
- Also includes a $50,000 1st game roster bonus

It's also interesting to note that there is no guaranteed money in this deal, so this is likely a tryout deal for the Patriots, according to boston.com. Also, this is not likely to stop the Patriots from addressing the defensive line in the draft if they choose to go that route.

Smith sat out all of last year with a torn ACL, but he had 67.5 career sacks in 9 seasons (2004-2012) for the Saints and 20 forced fumbles according to ESPN. Assuming he makes the Patriots 53-man roster, he will provide some much needed depth on the defensive line. This is a solid pick up by the Pats and one that could pay off if he can stay healthy.
