Will Smith not ready, but Belichick is optimistic

New Patriots acquisition Will Smith is still recovering from an ACL tear that he suffered last August. The veteran pass rusher was injured in the team's third preseason game which landed him on the Saints' injured-reserve list for the entire 2013 season. Entering his 10th season, severe injury could have very well been a threat to his career, but the defensive end inked a one-year deal with the Patriots.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick recently opened up about Smith's recovery process:
"We'll see where Will is able to get to. He's got a lot of experience — he's got a lot of production throughout his career," Belichick said, via WEEI.com. "I think he'll be competitive, but we'll have to see how he rehabs from the injury. But we're optimistic that he'll be on the field and be able to compete at some point. He's not ready right now, but I think he will be."

Smith tallied 67.5 career sacks since being drafted at 18th overall by the Saints in the 2004 and was named a Pro-Bowler in 2006. Though he has had a solid NFL career thus far and carries the Super Bowl Champion title with him as well, Smith will still have to compete to earn a spot on the roster. This could be especially difficult as he continues to recover from injury, but it looks like he is on track.
