Jamie Collins making big strides in pass coverage

ESPNBoston.com's Lee Schechter reported the other day that Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins has been excelling in pass coverage during training camp. The second-year pro batted down two passes and locked down every running back and tight end he covered during practice yesterday.

Collins seems to becoming a Belichick clone, saying that he still has room to improve.

"It was OK, you know, there's always room for improvement," Collins said. "Just coming out here, hopefully I'll get better tomorrow."

Collins also went on to say that he wants to become a faster player and become more familiar with the playbook.

This is great news, especially after I wrote a piece on him a few weeks back that detailed a potential breakout for him. When Collins saw the field consistently at the end of last season, he was a force.

If Collins can continue what he did last season, that's going to open up more avenues for the likes of Jerod Mayo and Dont'a Hightower to become even more versatile in stopping the run and in pass coverage. Collins is probably better than both of them in pass coverage right now, but at least none of them are Brandon Spikes.
