Arizona Cardinals to bring in Tommy Kelly for workout

After being cut by the Patriots on Sunday, former Patriots defensive lineman Tommy Kelly already has a tryout with another team lined up. CSNNE.com reports that the Arizona Cardinals are planning to bring him in and kick the tires.

Kelly is coming off of a torn ACL that cost him most of last season. Reports out of Patriots training camp is that he had looked pretty good but obviously the Patriots felt otherwise. Whether the Cardinals choose to sign him or not will give us a good indication of whether he is healthy and back to pre-injury form or not. If he is signed it would also be a good indication that Patriots are happy with the younger lineman they have on the roster and felt that Kelly wouldn't have been able to win a roster spot over them anyways.

Another reason he may have been cut is that if he is on the roster come week 1, then his salary is fully guaranteed since he is a "vested veteran". So the Patriots could have cut him hoping to bring him back after week 1.

There is another interesting aspect of Kelly's possible signing with the Cardinals to consider. Last week they had brought in Issac Sopoaga, who also was cut by the Patriots earlier this year. If Sopoaga is signed by another team, it will give the Patriots some salary cap relief

This could end up being a double whammy for the Patriots. When healthy, Kelly is the better player of the two. That makes him the most likely choice for the Cardinals to sign. Then, the Patriots would not only lose Kelly, who they might have wanted to bring back after week 1, but they also lose out on potential salary cap relief if Sopoaga isn't signed.
