Darrelle Revis and Pats working on an extension

Darrelle Revis could be working on a contract extension with the Patriots (Charles Krupa - AP)
The Patriots like what they see, and they don't want to see it leave. Bleacher Report NFL Insider Jason Cole reports that Robert Kraft has privately pulled Revis aside in hopes of talking about a contract extension. While many believe this would happen eventually, the fact that it has already been brought up to him from Robert Kraft himself shows the desire to make a long term commitment to one of the best defensive players in the NFL.

When it comes down to it, the money in this deal will be the biggest issue. With the recent contracts of Patrick Peterson, Joe Haden, and Richard Sherman all containing record high for defensive backs, Revis will likely use those examples to his advantage in the bargaining. Jason Cole believes that Revis deems himself worthy of $15 million a year on the open market, but may accept a deal in the $13-$14 million dollar range based on length and signing bonus. Could the Patriots absorb that sort of contract though?

Thankfully, next year they have a bit more flexibility to take on such a massive contract due to a few factors. One fact is that the Hernandez dead money, which is $7.5 million this year, will officially be off the book. That alone will be instrumental in signing Revis, but in addition to that, Logan Mankins' contract may also come off the book due to his possible release. Next year, Mankins has a cap hit of $11 million which may not be on par for his level of play. Should he not take a reduced salary, he could open up that money for the Revis extension.

Should this deal happen, it could elevate Revis' concentration and dedication to the Patriots, which would comfort all of those in the Patriots organization. And with such a burden off of everyone's shoulders, they can focus on winning games and Super Bowls.
