The Pats might want to wait to re-sign Revis

Patriots beat reporter for the Boston Herald, Jeff Howe, thinks the Revis contract talks with the Patriots are going to go a bit differently from what most people initially thought. While it was reported previously that the Patriots have already approached Revis to talk contract extension, Howe doesn't believe this would be the appropriate scenario:

"I'd be surprised if they did it just because they don't have to," Howe told Michael Felger. "If you do it before the season, then you have to account for next year's cap hit, right now it's at $25 million, then you have to get a lot more creative with the contract."

That right there is as good a reason as any to not want to strike a deal so quickly. If the contract is in play, it will likely come after the season is over, so that cap hit won't come into effect. That would make cap flexibility an issue, which would require the Pats and Revis to work the contract around a tight budget. Given the recent contracts of Patrick Peterson, Joe Haden and Richard Sherman, Revis will likely be able to bargain for a fairly similar contract.

"In talking to some people around the league, I think you're looking at in the neighborhood of three years, $45 million. I based that on the deals that Peterson, Haden and Sherman got. Those guys all got about $14 million."

It is not out of the realm of possibility that Revis may take to heart a slightly reduced salary in hopes of bringing more talent to Foxborough, but it may not be easy. It may also benefit the Patriots to wait just in case, for some unforeseen catastrophe, Revis doesn't work out or is injured they would not risk a potentially bad contract. Regardless of what happens in the near or distant future, one thing is for certain: the Patriots want Revis and will do anything they can to keep him in Foxborough.
