Wilfork's coverage skills on display in win against Vikings

When you think of playmakers in the Patriots secondary thoughts of the pro bowler Devin McCourty, the highly touted Revis or second year standout Logan Ryan may come to mind. You normally don't think of a 325 pound defensive lineman.
In last week's Patriots game there was a sack by Chandler Jones that was set up by Wilfork dropping back into coverage rather than rushing the pocket. Belichik broke down the play stating:
We actually go to a three-man rush here, where Vince pulls out into coverage... They are trying to run a clear-out route with the crosser underneath. We have good coverage from [Darrelle] Revis, ready to pick up [Kyle] Rudolph on the crosser. Vince drops out here and you see [Matt] Cassel come off the crosser and come back to the check-down, and probably didn't expect to see Vince to be standing there in front of the check-down. ... Can't find that receiver.
It is very rare to see Big Vince playing in the secondary, but in the past it has resulted in some big success.
In 2011 Wilfork had his first career interception against the Chargers, picking off Phillip Rivers on a pass intended for Mike Tolbert. The Chargers were driving into Patriots territory and Rivers looked to check down to his running back only to find Wilfork. Wilfork tipped and then caught his own tipped ball. The big man then took off down the field for 36 yards that set up a field goal before the end of the half. The Patriots went on to win 35-21.
After the Chargers game Wilfork jokingly reflected on his coverage style stating:
I'm a cover-two guy... I like to put my hands on the receiver, get physical at the line of scrimmage.
His only other career interception came a few weeks later against Oakland. Campbell attempted to throw a check down pass to Darren McFadden when Wilfork slid into the passing lane. You can watch both interceptions below.
Wilfork has statistically had a quiet year so far this season, he has recorded 1 tackle and 3 assisted tackles.
