Akeem Ayers shines in his debut as a Patriot

AP / Elise Amendola

There are a lot of great things we can say about the Patriots in the aftermath of their drubbing of the monsters of the midway (more like little monsters). An interesting side note was the newly acquired linebacker Akeem Ayers.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe broke down the defensive snaps for the Patriots on Twitter and showed that Ayers played 46% of the snaps.

While on the field Ayers recorded 5 tackles and was involved in sacking Jay Cutler. Though it is only Ayers first game as a Patriot he looks like a real gem when you consider how thin the Patriots were at linebacker and what the Patriots gave up to acquire him.

The Patriots traded their sixth round pick for Ayers and a seventh round selection. If the Titans continue their downward spiral and if the Patriots go deep in the playoffs then they essentially traded back about 10 spots in next year's draft to fill in an immediate need. Now that is some wheeling and dealing.

The Hoodie himself praised Ayers and his ability to adapt to a new system quickly stating:

I think Akeem did a good job this week of coming in and getting acclimated to everything. I mean, new town, new team, new terminology -- there wasn’t a whole lot of carryover from the system that he was in to the system that we run. I thought he did a real good job of making that transition playing in the kicking game, playing on defense and just getting the game plan, the scouting report. The whole transition was a lot in a few days. I think he handled it well, helped us in the game.

Will Ayers be a successful starter in New England or will he fizzle out? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!
