Goodell forced to testify in Ray Rice hearing

It was reported yesterday by Adam Schefter that Roger Goodell will be coerced into testifying in the Ray Rice hearing.

So what does this mean?

Ray Rice is appealing his indefinite suspension and the hearing has two main purposes. First, it will determine whether the former Raven lied to the NFL in connection with the investigation that resulted in a two-game suspension. Second, the hearing will discover whether the NFL knew, or should have known, the elevator video content before the NFL issued Rice’s two-game suspension.

Goodell must testify in this hearing and apparently there will be no limits in the scope of questioning. There seems to be some distrust with what Goodell said he knew and what he actually knew. Specifically, whether he had seen the infamous elevator footage before TMZ dropped it online.

If Goodell did know the contents of the video before hand he will have to make a choice. Either hurt the credibility of the NFL by admitting he knew of the contents or possibly commit perjury and claim he didn't know. That is only a concern if Goodell's account of the investigation is a lie.

Goodell's testimony of course will be compared by former FBI director Robert Mueller's investigation. If inconsistencies arise NFL owners may be looking for a new commissioner.
