Will Cleveland show Hoyer the money?

For the first time since 1994 the Browns find themselves at the top of their very tough division. They also happen to be in a very tough financial decision with regard to their quarterback roster. Their current starter Brian Hoyer is in a contract year and they just drafted the Heisman winner Johnny Manziel in the first round of the draft. No matter what happens the Browns will have to decide whether to let the former Patriot backup go in free agency or pay him starter money.

Why Hoyer shouldn't be paid
Yes, the Browns are at the top of the division but is Hoyer the reason? Look no further than Hoyer's completion percentage, he ranks 34th (among quarterbacks who have made at least 40 passing attempts) with 58.5%. That is just slightly better than Jake Locker and EJ Manuel who were both benched by their respective teams earlier this season (both have 58.0% completion). He is tied for 23rd in the NFL for touchdowns thrown.

You also have Johnny Manziel waiting in the wings who the Browns moved up in the draft the grab. The idea of them sidelining him for a few more years for a middle of the road quarterback seems absurd.

Of course Hoyer will get paid!
Hoyer has proven himself of being able to lead this offense with only 4 interceptions and virtually no one to throw to. Yes, Hoyer has only thrown 10 touchdowns but when you consider the lack of talent around him it is amazing he was able to hit double digits in touchdowns thrown. Jordan Cameron has pretty much been injured most of the season and Josh Gordon is about to come back from his 10 game suspension. Should Cameron stay healthy and Gordon show the same talent he had last year Hoyer's numbers will skyrocket!

With regard to Johnny Football, screw that guy. I hated him in college. Just check out the maturity level on that douche bag in a game against Rice.

Seriously? The guy taunted a defensive player after scoring a touchdown in a game where they are already up 28-45 before the play. Manziel was also caught on camera rolling up a dollar bill in a bathroom last summer. Now maybe he was rolling that twenty dollar bill to tip the bathroom attendant or maybe he was rolling it for a friend. But given his history a more immature reason comes to mind. Oh, and he flipped off the Washington bench in a preseason game. Personally, I think we are seeing the beginnings of the next Ryan Leaf in Johnny Football and the Browns were lucky to have Hoyer leading them this year.

At the end of the day it will depend on how the Browns end their season. If Hoyer starts turning the ball over and the Browns fail to make the playoffs then Cleveland will send him packing. If Hoyer leads his team to the playoffs and plays well enough he could be seeing a big pay day.

Do you think Hoyer will resign with the Browns this off season or will they let him walk? Let us know in the comments section below!
