Patriots receive two compensatory picks in next months draft

John Leyba, The Denver Post

The compensatory draft picks designed to help a team with its free agent losses the previous year have been announced and the Patriots are receiving two picks. They will receive a 3rd rounder(97 overall) and a 7th round pick(253 overall).

The formula to figuring out such picks is held tighter than your Grandma's favorite cake recipe but it essentially works out to if a team loses more players in free agency than they sign coupled with the contracts they sign then boom! You get a draft pick!

In 2014 the Patriots lost Aqib Talib, Brandon Spikes, LeGarrette Blount and Dane Fletcher while signing Brandon Browner and Brandon Lafell which, by the secret formula, earned them the 3rd and 7th round picks. Players like Darrelle Revis, who was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, don't count as free agent signings and don't affect the formula.

The two additional compensatory draft picks bring the Patriots total to nine for next months draft, including four in the top 100 picks.
