Julian Edelman the quarterback? Probably not

With Jimmy Garoppolo nursing a shoulder injury, rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett will take the reins this Thursday against the Houston Texans. Brissett is the only healthy quarterback on the roster at the moment, so who is the backup?

It might be Julian Edelman.

You may remember that Edelman was a quarterback at Kent State, but has excelled as a wide receiver since being drafted by the Patriots in 2009. Naturally, wide receiver is the position that Edelman would prefer to play, and he hopes to not have to step into an emergency quarterback role while awaiting the return of Tom Brady (and now Jimmy Garoppolo, too).

CSNNE:

“I haven’t thrown in a while, so,” Edelman answered with a smile.”

“No. No, don’t get that construed out there,” answered Edelman. “Did I use that right? Those (quarterbacks), you can’t take anything from those guys. They throw the ball so well. I play receiver for a reason.”

As of right now, the Patriots aren't planning to bring another quarterback in due to the short week. So that means Edelman will have to be ready in case he's forced to take over under center.
