Catching up: Patriots roster cuts, waiver wire adds

Stew Milne/USA TODAY Sports

While I was on the beach on a cloudy ass day, the Patriots trimmed their roster down, which always sneaks up on me.

Most of the cuts that were made weren't really surprising, but of course there were a few that many didn't expect. Mike Gillislee, who signed with the Saints, and Cyrus Jones, were the biggest names that Bill Belichick axed from the roster. Brandon Bolden was also cut again, but it wouldn't be shocking if he came back.

The two cuts that surprised me were Riley McCarron and Marquis Flowers, who signed with Detroit. The Pats lack depth at wide receiver and Flowers seemed to carve out a solid role with New England last year. Here is the full list, courtesy of Mike Reiss:

Released: DT John Atkins; P Corey Bojorquez; RB Brandon Bolden; C/G Luke Bowanko; OT/G Cole Croston; QB Danny Etling; RB Kenneth Farrow; C/G James Ferentz; LB Marquis Flowers; RB Mike Gillislee; DE Trent Harris; DL Frank Herron; CB Cyrus Jones; G Jason King; LB Harvey Langi; DE Eric Lee; CB Ryan Lewis; WR Devin Lucien; WR K.J. Maye; WR Riley McCarron; S A.J. Moore; RB Khalfani Muhammad; FB Henry Poggi; C/G Brian Schwenke; OT Matt Tobin; S Damarius Travis; WR Paul Turner; TE Will Tye; DT Vincent Valentine; RB Ralph Webb; CB Jomal Wiltz

To address the depth issues at wide receiver, the Patriots added two players at the position through the waiver wire. Chad Hansen, a 2017 fourth-round pick of the New York Jets and Amara Darboh, a 2017 third-round pick of Seattle's.
