Three (wild) explanations as to why the Patriots let Welker walk

Yesterday, all of Patriots Nation felt a blow to the gut. Fan-favorite and NFL All-Pro Wes Welker elected to become a member of the Denver Broncos. As heartbroken as we all were, we tried to understand why this happened . . . nope, still no comfort.
Elway's stupid grin will haunt my nightmares...
Anyways, right after Adam Schefter tweeted that Welker had decided to join the Broncos (because when Schefter says it, it's official) I found myself in a fan-depression. The Patriots couldn't give him 2 years and $12 million? SERIOUSLY? I then found myself pondering the meaning of life and texted my college roommate telling him that if he never sees me again, this deal is the reason.

Right before I dropped out of school to pursue a career as a professional hobo and start digging my own grave, the Patriots then signed Danny Amendola as expected. This made a lot of sense and eased the pain.... BUT for that brief period in time where all you could hear about was that the Patriots basically blew it, the deepest parts of my mind did whatever they could to find an explanation. I decided to share them with you...

1. THE PATRIOTS ARE GOING TO TRADE FOR LARRY FITZGERALD!!!
Arguably the most talented receiver in the league, Larry Fitzgerald's skills are being wasted in Arizona with the Cardinals. Fitz hasn't had a decent quarterback since Kurt Warner and the guy still makes remarkable plays. My grandmother could throw to this guy and he would make her look like Johnny Unitas. After deciding not to spend any money on Welker, maybe the Pats would finally dish out the big bucks (and a a lot of draft picks) to trade for Fitzgerald. I wasn't the only person who thought this could happen

2. "Brady's in shotgun, takes the snap, looks deep and fires the ball to... VICTOR CRUZ!!"
Many analysts believe that the Patriots are positioned to draft a wide receiver, should a solid talent drop to them. However, this is unlikely to happen since they have the 29th pick. With other reports revealing that the Pats have looked into the possibility of signing Victor Cruz, I got to thinking about how this could happen. The Giants placed a first-round tender on Cruz, which means if any other team signs the WR, they have to forfeit their first-round pick to the Giants. Well, with one of the lower first-round picks, all the cap space in the world, and a desperate need for a wide receiver, why wouldn't the Patriots do it??? The UMass graduate would look sweet in one of the old-school red jerseys... Still possible but don't hold your breath.

3. The Pats are waiting for Darrelle Revis to play out his contract, then take his talents to Foxboro

I wrote about this one about two weeks ago. According to sources, Revis would be willing to join the Patriots if the Jets fail to trade him and he then plays out the last season of his contract in New York. What better way to smack the Jets in the face than to steal the heart of their team? With the Jets trying to ship the All-Pro DB out of town, Revis apparently took this a bit harshly. Insulted and upset that his team is basically desperate to get rid of him, maybe he would decide to play for their most-hated rival. Brady will make due with the receivers he has in addition to Hernandez and Gronk, while the defense gets the best cornerback in the league. They would easily be Super Bowl favorites. Again, somewhat realistic but don't get too excited...

Not much to analyze here, just some comfort food for all of you that are still feeling a little woozy. Fans can dream can't we? Like Lloyd Christmas once said, "So you're telling me there's a chance!!"
