Blount takes pay cut, Moe is like Welker, Boyce misses time

Here are some of the key leftover storylines, from my view point, that have come out of the past couple days so far.

1. LeGarrette Blount was once a starter for Tampa Bay, and a very good looking one at times. However, a decline in performance and a breakout rookie year from Doug Martin, and now he finds himself close to the bottom of the running back depth chart of a team over 1,300 miles north.

So, is a pay cut in order?

Yes and especially when it's Bill Belichick we're talking about here.

ProFootballTalk:
Blount was a restricted free agent this year, and he signed a one-year contract with the Bucs that paid him a total of $1.75 million, including $1.25 million in base salary, $350,000 in reporting bonus and a $150,000 workout bonus.

But with the Patriots, Blount has agreed to a new contract that pays him a base salary of just $630,000, and a workout bonus of just $50,000. That was the deal Blount had to agree to for the trade (which sent running back Jeff Demps and a seventh-round pick to Tampa) to be consummated.

2. T.J. Moe shares a very similar start to his NFL career as Wes Welker did. They were both undrafted. However, unlike Welker, Moe found his way onto the Patriots roster right away. Whether or not he sticks is another question.

With Moe being a shorter receiver who is white and often has the word "scrappy" associated with him, he's going to draw comparisons with the former Patriot great. However, when asked about it, Moe didn't seem overly concerned with that stuff right now.

Boston.com
“It’s an honor to get compared to a great player,” said Moe, who was signed by the Patriots last week. “I’m not worried about that, I’m worried about trying to make the Patriots roster and trying to do everything they ask me to do, so from start to finish here we’ll be listening . . . I’ll let the comparisons [be] left to you guys.”

Moe now completes the full circle. Every white receiver on the Patriots roster has received a Wes Welker comparison (Amendola and Edelman being the others). Way to stereotype guys!

3. Josh Boyce, a receiver, was the Patriots one and only fourth round pick. The reason he lasted that long of course is because he has a broken pinky toe. That didn't stop him from impressing teams with his 40 time (4.38) but injuries will always cause a player to fall, there's too much uncertainty.

One such disadvantage to drafting an injured player is being seen with Boyce right now. The rookie has not been participating in rookie minicamp so far. With the Patriots offense as complicated as it is, you would think that the sooner players can start, the better off they'll be.

Boston Herald:
Boyce was again the only player who didn't participate in the media portion of today's practice, but he remained on the sideline to take mental reps, which is still important.
