The Bills aren't worried about starting Jeff Tule

The next Aaron Rodgers?
Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel underwent some "minor" knee surgery that could cause him to miss the first game of the season. After backup Kevin Kolb sustained a concussion, that put unknown Jeff Toule into the starting role come Game 1 against the Pats.

Since no one's ever heard of the kid - he's the first undrafted rookie to start the first week of the season - everyone expects the Bills to get trounced.

Well, except the Bills that is.

Rapoport said he asked Whaley if the organization felt it had hit on something in Tuel, who wasn't even a regular starter his senior season at Washington State.

"If he keeps progressing, we think we may have," Whaley said, according to Rapoport. "This guy's got a little something to him."

Tuel has had a nice preseason, posting a 106 passer rating. He's actually outplayed Kevin Kolb, whose career is in jeopardy following a serious concussion this weekend.

Rapoport has been told that Manuel is still on track to start Week 1, meaning Tuel's star moment may not ever actually arrive. Still, the Bills don't sound like a team that believes all is lost if Tuel takes the field.

Certainly, no one in New England is counting out an unknown backup quarterback. For what it's worth, E.J. Manuel is largely unproven in the NFL as well. It's hard to say with any certainty that he would fare better than Tule in that first game.

Still, you would have to think that any undrafted rookie is going to have a tough time handling a championship caliber team in his first NFL game. Right?
