Mankins relates to rookie receivers

The Patriots are currently 2-0 but the record is somewhat misleading. The offense led by former MVP Tom Brady, isn't as dominant as it once was. The running game isn't as strong as most people would have thought it would be going into this season and there are many question marks in the aerial attack. With Brady's favorite targets Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski out with injury, the three rookie receivers, Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins and Josh Boyce, have been looked
upon to step up and push the offense.

Nine year Patriot lineman Logan Mankins, can relate to the rookies because he was looked upon as a rookie to come right in and make an impact. There is no question that the rookies have loads of potential but they haven't had the time to grow under Belichick's offense.

“I was a young guy like them thrown into the fire as a rookie,” the 31-year-old elder statesman of the Patriots offensive line said yesterday. “There were things I didn’t understand going on, so I understand what they’re going through. You’re put on the field and expected to produce like you’ve been here a long time, but you haven’t been here a long time. It’s not easy. At Fresno (State, where the guard emerged as a surprise No. 1 draft pick in 2005) it was a lot easier. In college you pretty much just block the guy in front of you. You don’t have all these combinations in pass protection. In college you pretty much just slide the protection all one way or the other.

Having a leader like Mankins on the team will only help the rookies get better over time. Many people are impatient but if they learn to be patient with these receivers, this offense could be something special in the not so distant future.
