MRI confirms that Rob Gronkowski tore ACL and MCL [Update: Could be out a year]

Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski suffered a vicious hit to the knee in the third quarter of yesterday's win over the Browns.

He was carted off the field after writhing in pain on the ground. Everyone feared the worst, and initial reports were that he had torn his ACL.

Gronk had an MRI this morning, and it seems those tests have confirmed what we all expected, and in fact the results show the injury is even more severe, with a torn ACL and MCL.

No more Gronk this year.

Rob Gronkowski ends the year playing just seven games, but still hauling in four touchdowns and close to 600 yards. He was the Patriots main weapon on offense, helping re-ignite a stagnant unit that was struggling without him on the field to begin the year.

The ACL/MCL injury will begin yet another off-season of rehab for Gronkowski, who has yet to have a completely healthy season since his rookie year. While he played the entire regular season campaigns in 2010 and 2011, he was injured in the 2011 AFC Championship game and was relegated to a decoy in the Super Bowl loss to the Giants. Last year, he broke his forearm blocking on an extra point in a November game against the Colts. He returned a month later but re-aggravated the injury early in a playoff win over the Houston Texans.

Since that November game against the Colts, Gronk has udergone numerous surgeries on his arm after numerous infections developed. He also underwent back surgery in June.

The poor kid cannot catch a break and is starting to develop a reputation as an injury prone player.

Browns' safety T.J. Ward hit Gronk low in yesterday's game, and admitted that he was aiming low to avoid a fine for hitting high.

[Update]

To make matters even worse, Gronk is looking at a long recovery time. Remember, when Derrick Rose tore his ACL in the NBA, he sat out the entire following season. According to Adam Schefter, Gronk could be looking at a full year of recovery. At best, we're looking at the same situation as we had this year, with Gronk being a PUP possibility to start the year.
