Bill Romanowski: Pats Need More Around Brady

Photo from WEEI
In keeping with the theme of getting more weapons around Brady, Bill Romanowski, ex-Boston College star and NFL linebacker, went on WEEI and is advocating that the Patriots get more talent around Tom Brady. Randy Moss said yesterday that it "hurts" to see Brady with a lack of talent around him. Also, Patriots Life been profiling possible free agent targets in our "Call to Arms" series. Are we noticing a theme here? Mr. Kraft, if you happen to read this, please take the hint. Go after a high profile wide receiver or tight end and give Tom Brady a chance at a 4th ring.

Back to Romanowski. He voiced what I think a lot of Pats fans were thinking when Wes Welker left: Why, WHY, did the Patriots let Welker leave?

“To let Wes Welker get away, mind-boggling to me,”€ Romanowski said. “That really is, that move. But you have to be able to make tough decisions as a head coach. … You may have an off [year], do you call the AFC championship an off year? On some level, when you’€™re the New England Patriots, you do. OK, not winning and getting to the Super Bowl is an off year. And it should be that way because you built a reputation of being one of the best organizations, you clearly have, still, one of the best quarterbacks.”

C'mon - we were all thinking when Welker left. Now he's playing in the Super Bowl with Denver instead of with New England. That was one of the more mind-boggling moves I've witnessed as a Pats fan, as I was under the impression Tom Brady restructured his contract before the 2013 season to keep Welker around.

Romanowski pointed to the Denver Broncos as an example of what the Patriots should be doing - they put a number of weapons around a quarterback who is near the end of a Hall of Fame career, and it's paying off, as the Denver Broncos will be playing in the Super Bowl.

“€œThe game is about the horses,”€ Romanowski said. “€œYou’ve got to have the talent, bring in the talent and make sure you have more talent around Tom Brady and to me, look at what the Denver Broncos did. They made sure they were deep at receiver and they win games by outscoring people. That’€™s usually what New England does. Hats off, though, to New England with what they were able to do, change things and turned themselves into more of a conventional offense, phenomenal coaching.”

Moral of the story: Give Brady another weapon (or 2 if you can manage it) if you want to win another Super Bowl, Mr. Kraft.
