Free Agency Roundup: Monday's biggest news

Considering the sheer amount of player movement set to occur in the next few days, we'll be posting a daily recap summing up the previous day's noteworthy signings. Here is our recap of the Monday's activity, part of the "legal tampering" period which will continue until free agency officially opens at 4 pm today.

  • The Carolina Panthers, in poor cap shape thanks to some shortsighted contracts handed out by former GM Marty Hurney, are looking to trade receiver Steve Smith. If/when they can't find someone willing to trade for the right to pay a soon-to-be 35 year old receiver with declining production $7 million this year, they'll reportedly release him.
  • Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor surprisingly avoided getting cut by agreeing to a significant pay cut, saving the Steelers $4.75 million in desperately needed cap space. The Steelers will open up even more space tomorrow when they will reportedly release linebacker Lamarr Woodley. By designating Woodley as a Post June 1st cut, the Steelers will open up $8 million in cap space while triggering an automatic $8,580,000 dead money charge on their 2015 cap.
  • The Indianapolis Colts resigned a defensive contributor in defensive end Fili Moala, but also now appear poised to lose cornerback Vontae Davis, who reportedly is close to a deal with an undisclosed team. The loss of Davis will be overshadowed if the Colts can land Broncos free agent receiver Eric Decker, who would be a logical fit playing alongside a returning Reggie Wayne and TY Hilton. The Colts have been listed as one of the main competitors for Decker's services.
  • The New York Giants still have Chris Snee on the roster because the veteran guard agreed to a pay cut. They no longer have center David Baas because of his refusal to do the same.
  • With left tackle Jered Veldheer seemingly set to leave town for Arizona as a free agent, the Raiders could be setting their sights on St. Louis free agent Rodger Saffold. The Raiders are one of the few teams on the market looking to sign Saffold as a tackle rather than a guard, which could help them secure his services.
  • The 49ers are set to release cornerback Carlos Rogers, whose age and declining pay made him an obvious candidate for release with Donte Whitner and Tarell Brown up for new contracts. Rodgers will likely have to wait until most of the bigger dominos fall in free agency before getting a look from teams.
  • The J-E-T-S opened up another $8 million in cap space by announcing the expected release of receiver Santonio Holmes. The moves put the Jets at $40 million in cap space, and they can open up another $8.3 million by releasing Mark Sanchez. Don't be surprised if the Jets are in the thick of things the next few days.
  • Tennessee's Alterraun Verner is expected to be signed quickly. He called the Patriots "a possibility" yesterday, although that will likely change if the Pats are able to resign Aqib Talib. Verner has also been linked to the Broncos and Steelers.
Whew! And that's just the build up to the when the floodgates will really open, at 4 pm today when the league year officially opens. Be sure to check out our roundup tomorrow to find out if anyone manages to top the stupidity of Minnesota giving backup defensive end Everson Griffin a $42.25 million, five year deal (aka $14 million less than Michael Bennett).
