Brady finally takes on Revis at practice, Garoppolo impresses
OTA's really do not feature too many storylines regarding performances at practice. However, not many players around the league are being observed and evaluated right now as much as the new Patriots Darrelle Revis. One of the main notes from analysts is that quarterback Tom Brady had not yet challenged Revis during team drills. That changed during Thursday's practice.
According to Phil Perry of CSNNE.com, Brady took on Revis three times at yesterday's practice. All three passes were completed to receiver Julian Edelman. Of the three completions, Perry noted that Revis was flat out beaten by Edelman on the outside while all of Brady's passes were "on the money". Though this really isn't much to read into, it's fun to see some of the game's greatest players go head-to-head on what will soon be a near daily basis. One can only imagine that it will make both sides better.
Also, there was a quick note that second-string quarterback Ryan Mallett was not at practice on Thursday. Though these practices are optional, Perry pointed out that when a majority of the team is present, it becomes particularly noticeable when one player, in this case a quarterback, is not there. Perry went on to explain that because of this, rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo got an extended look in which he was fairly impressive and clearly improved. When practice ended, Garoppolo stayed an additional 20 minutes with some wide receivers to do some extra work.
