Charlie Weis thinks Tom Brady's style of play has been exposed

Charlie Weis was once one of the masterminds behind the teams that brought three Lombardi trophies to New England.

He earned those championship rings partially due to the patient, calculated arm of one Tom Brady.

Times have changed though, apparently. Weis believed those traditional dropback type passers like Brady are old hat. These days you need someone who can run with the ball.

NFL.com:
"You're playing 11-on-10 football (without one)," Weis added. "If the quarterback is never going to carry the ball and is not a threat to the defense, and they don't have to worry about him, they're plus one as far as numbers go. I think by having the quarterback being able to be one of the guys that carries the ball, puts much more stress on the defense.

"I think the true dropback quarterbacks have been exposed. And that's one of the reasons why I changed what we're doing."

It's a little bit hard to argue with Charlie Weis. Times are changing, and more and more of the quarterback prospects coming out of college are guys with the athleticism to be a threat to run.

The Tom Bradys, Joe Montanas and Peyton Mannings of the world have long been the gold standard of quarterback play, with the running QB being more of a gimmick. However, we just saw a more mobile quarterback win the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks (though its hard to argue that was the reason they won). We've also seen Colin Kaepernick lead his team to two straight NFC Championship games and players like Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III lead their downtrodden teams to playoff appearances. Even if those didn't end so well for them.

Will the Patriots' quarterback after Brady be a running QB? I guess that depends on how Jimmy Garoppolo turns out.
