Stock check for Patriots, which players helped themselves most Thursday night?

Preseason is a time for players to show their true colors, be good or bad, and some player's stock increased last night while others hurt their chances. This is the first time fans get to see these players in live game action, and the first time the coaches can get a real read in these players.

Stock Up:

Jimmy Garoppolo: He entered the game replacing an unimpressive Ryan Mallett. He immediately showed a quick release, good instincts and comfortability in the Patriots' offense. He has drawn a lot of criticism during training camp for his lackluster performances, while Ryan Mallett was receiving nothing but praise for his consistently strong performances during training camp.

Malcolm Butler: The undrafted rookie cornerback out of West Alabama showcased his ball skills and confidence when he received the start last night against the Redskins. He showed good poise and was competitive in coverage. Especially in the end zone.

Brian Tyms: The second year receiver out of Florida A&M was one of the lone bright spots from the dismal performance the Patriots put in last night. He showed solid effort and was able to beat coverage and make plays down the field. He also showed good chemistry with rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Unfortunately, he is suspended for the first four games of the season.

Stock Down:

Ryan Mallett: The most anticipated player coming into this game was Ryan Mallett. With it being announced early that Brady would not play this game was supposed to be Mallett's showcase. Instead he showed a lack of confidence, inconsistent accuracy and an inability to connect consistently while playing with the starting offense. His future with the Patriots could be in serious jeopardy if he turns another performance like this against the Eagles.

Stephen Houston: The undrafted back out of Indiana had few chances last night to showcase his abilities and he disappoints with his limited chances. He had a fumble after trying to gain extra yards, putting himself in an extremely tough position for him to make the 53 man roster.

Nate Solder: A holding penalty on the first drive brought back a third down conversion and lead to a punt. He allowed for Mallett to be sacked and showed inconsistent pass blocking. He will need to step up in order to keep Brady upright this season.
