Jerod Mayo undergoes surgery on patella tendon
While it's not yet official, you can assume that Mayo will be soon placed on season ending injured reserve by the Patriots.
Mayo suffered a knee injury in last Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills and all reports since have indicated that his season is done. The news today from Tom E. Curran seems to confirm that.

Injuries to the patellar tendon are typically even more difficult to recover from than ACL injuries. This not only hurts the Patriots' depth at linebacker this year, losing their defensive captain, but it also hurts them at the position in the future.
Mayo has now suffered season ending injuries in two straight years (12 games in two years), and we can at least start to wonder whether he'll ever be the same player again.
Fortunately for Mayo, the Patriots uncharacteristically gave him quite the player friendly contract back in 2011.
The linebacker, often jokingly called Bill Jr. by his teammates, still has $4.5 of his $7 million salary in 2015 guaranteed for injury. That's a rarity in the NFL to have guaranteed money this far into a deal and it is probably the only thing keeping him a Patriot next season.
