Patriots use May 9 tender on LeGarrette Blount

Ever heard of the May 9 tender? Yeah, neither have I.

The Patriots placed this little-used tender on free agent running back LeGarrette Blount. Under the tender, if Blount remains unsigned past July 22, he would only be eligible to play for the Patriots during the 2017 season.

Should he sign elsewhere before that date, the Patriots would receive a 2018 compensatory draft pick.

With a crowded backfield in place, it would seem that the Patriots are doing this to get an extra draft pick if another team gets desperate for a running back.
