John’s Well-Educated Guesses: Week 5 – The Recap

Every week I make predictions about how things will play out in the game.  I’m a man of integrity and I always answer for my predictions.  It’s time to pay the piper.

Prediction: Famous Jameis will throw for over 300 yards:  I don’t know what to say about this defense at this point.  They honestly look competitive most of the game.  The coverage is there, the pass rush is there when we need it, and we are generally stopping the run.  It’s just 2-3 lapses per game (Thanks Stephon) that go for a 75 yard tuddy.  You can’t win if you are giving away free tuddies like that.  It pains me to predict this, but until they hold ANYONE below 300 yards, I gotta assume it’s going to happen.

Result:  319 yards passing…sure didn’t feel like it though.  Winston was and the Tampa Bay Offense looked waaay off all day.  Minus a few Doug Martin rushes, this looked like a JV offense.  Not the explosive attack that was advertised.  Funny what short rest and better defensive play can do to a team.  That being said, 319 is still a lot.

Prediction: Gronk will play and be a difference maker: OK so this isn’t an earth shattering prediction, but it was unsettling to see him on the injury report.  Let’s say he has to have 6 catches and/or a tuddy for me to be right.

Result:  DUDE, WTF!!!!!!  It doesn’t get any more wrong than this.  I thought with the incentives in his contract he would play no matter what.  I guess he won’t see that extra $$$$.  Just glad we didn’t need him, and I am always the biggest proponent of having Gronk available when it REALLY matters.  I was still very wrong though.

Prediction: Stamina will be an issue:  The Pats are normally the best conditioned team, so I hope it’s not them.  Tampa is hot and muggy, Florida is a house of horrors for a lot of teams.  I think the heat will be an issue of note in this game.

Result:  Ok, so this was not immediately apparent on the TV.  But I think it did have at least some impact.  The Pats D looked bad in the 4th quarter, and if they let Jameis come down the field and score, we would be looking for something to blame…that’s for damn sure.

Prediction: Two crappy defenses, short rest, crappy game.  Pats win 38-31

Result: Do I get credit that it was at least a crappy game??
